Last week, I published a post with all known IHG Rewards Club bonus codes.  I decided to put them to the test and registered a new IHG Rewards Club account for my father.  Last weekend, I did a mattress run at nearby Holiday Inn Brussels Airport and today the results came in.  Not every promotion code worked, but most did.  What would have normally been a 987 points stay, turned into a 22,487 points stay thanks to the bonus codes!  I also earned Gold Status thanks to promotional code 1038. (new!)

Last weekend, a number of TravelMagic enthusiasts joined me at Holiday Inn Express Mechelen for a mattress run (= staying at a hotel with the sole purpose of collecting loyalty points). By status matching to IHG Rewards Club Platinum and signing up for all IHG Rewards Club promotion codes, we managed to score up to 33500 bonus points!

On top of these bonus points, we also earned two qualifying nights for The Big Win offer.  We used the IHG 2-for-1 rate (select Partner Rate 2×1) to book our weekend stay which was €76 for two nights (Friday till Sunday).  We weren’t 100% sure if our second night would qualify for The Big Win offer, but can now confirm it did!  In my case, it was my second saturday night stay using my father’s account, resulting in 10000 extra Big Win points.  After two stays (3 nights, incl. 2 Sat nights) ‘my father’ now earned a total of 50,252 points!  Breakdown: 2652 standard points + 36500 bonus code points + 11100 Big Win points.

With our TravelMagic meet-up at Crowne Plaza Antwerp last weekend, my dad completed his IHG Rewards Club Big Win challenge for 2013.  On top of the 50,100 points earned with The Big Win, he also managed to score an additional 40,500 bonus points by signing up for all the IHG Rewards Club promo codes.  Including base points, he earned a total of 94,946 points.  That’s almost enough for 2 free nights at any of the most expensive IHG properties worldwide (100K) or 19 (!!) free nights at PointBreaks hotels (95K).  To earn the 94,946 points, he spent a total of €233 on four nights (3 stays).

Back in Nov 2013, a Flyertalk member reported it was possible to book all United flights without fuel surcharges via Norwegian site Wideroe. As fuel surcharges can make up a significant portion of the cost an airline ticket, the airfares at United were greatly reduced by this error. After some quick search queries, I found tickets from Amsterdam to New York for as low as €122 round trip! I wasn’t convinced the fares would be honored, as Wideroe was a small website and thousands of tickets were booked throughout the weekend of Nov 23-24. Turned out, a Wideroe employee had posted the error on Flyertalk, as they had figured out the problem wasn’t at their site, but at GDS Amadeus. In the end, the fares were honored and I traveled from Amsterdam to New York for just €122! The two United flights also earned me 7278 status miles with Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles. As of 2014, I’ve switched from Lufthansa Miles & More to Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles for most of my Star Alliance revenue flights, as M&M drastically reduced the number of miles earned on economy flights. The United flights of this trip (booking class K) would have earned only 25% of the flown miles at Lufthansa Miles & More versus 100% of the flown miles at Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles. Turkish Airlines status matches elite cards from other airlines, including Star Alliance partners. I status matched my Lufthansa Miles & More Senator card with Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles Elite, both Star Alliance Gold cards.

For my two night stay in New York (Jan 17-19), I booked two IHG properties. On Friday night I stayed at Hotel Indigo Brooklyn, on Saturday night at Holiday Inn Midtown 31st St. Both hotels offer an exceptional rate with includes 25,000 IHG Rewards Club bonus points. The fact you get 25K bonus points per stay might not always be exceptional price wise, as the rate is substantially higher than the lowest available rate. However, what makes the rate exceptional is the 25K bonus points count as elite qualifying points. With 60,000 elite qualifying points in one calendar year you (re-)qualify for IHG Rewards Club Platinum status. My two stays in New York City earned me 54180 elite qualifying points (4180 base points + 50K bonus points) which is only 5820 points short of re-qualifying as Platinum member!

IHG Rewards Club has just announced its Fall 2014 promotion called Into the Nights. Similar to previous ‘The Big Win‘ promos, you need to complete a number of ‘Offers’ before the end of 2014 to earn extra IHG Rewards Club points. When you logon to https://intothenights.ihg.com/ you’ll see your personalized offers. Here are mine:


Each individual offer comes with a number of points. In my case, I can earn a total of 30,900 offer points. Completing all offers results in an additional bonus: the choice between a Bonus points package OR a number of Free Nights. Note that my personalized offer page states “Complete 7 of 7 offers and earn 31,000 Bonus points or 2 free nights”, your offer might state e.g. “Complete 3 of 4 offers and earn XX bonus points and X free nights”.

I’ll be able to choose between 31,000 extra bonus points or two Free Nights. Last week, I published a post with all known IHG Rewards Club bonus codes.  I decided to put them to the test and registered a new IHG Rewards Club account for my father.  Last weekend, I did a mattress run at nearby Holiday Inn Brussels Airport and today the results came in.  Not every promotion code worked, but most did.  What would have normally been a 987 points stay, turned into a 22,487 points stay thanks to the bonus codes!  I also earned Gold Status thanks to promotional code 1038. (new!)

I value IHG Rewards Club points at $70 per 10,000 points, which is the cheapest price you can buy them at using the points + cash trick.  This stay earned me around $150 in points which I can redeem for 4 free nights using the PointBreaks offer.  Staying 2 more times at two different IHG brands (total of 3 nights) will complete my The Big Win offer, netting me another 50,000 points!

Last weekend, a number of TravelMagic enthusiasts joined me at Holiday Inn Express Mechelen for a mattress run (= staying at a hotel with the sole purpose of collecting loyalty points). By status matching to IHG Rewards Club Platinum and signing up for all IHG Rewards Club promotion codes, we managed to score up to 33500 bonus points!

On top of these bonus points, we also earned two qualifying nights for The Big Win offer.  We used the IHG 2-for-1 rate (select Partner Rate 2×1) to book our weekend stay which was €76 for two nights (Friday till Sunday).  We weren’t 100% sure if our second night would qualify for The Big Win offer, but can now confirm it did!  In my case, it was my second saturday night stay using my father’s account, resulting in 10000 extra Big Win points.  After two stays (3 nights, incl. 2 Sat nights) ‘my father’ now earned a total of 50,252 points!  Breakdown: 2652 standard points + 36500 bonus code points + 11100 Big Win points.
